How Can You Take the Lead in 2022?

Lean leader

Leadership is one of the key networking talents that many people demand these days. There are only very few who can lead, and it is important that, in the 21st century, the supply of Pinnacle leaders should be at a rise. To attain such a level of wisdom and leadership, there is a process. The process can be mentored by individuals who have practised, achieved, and yet following this journey of brilliance.

The value of leadership management is measured mostly by how an individual acts upon a situation. The individual’s character is a theory that eventually connects through the change of ways in doing things. Discipline, taking an extra mile, and creating a permanent impact (positive) around his or her management are factors necessary for ultimate leadership.

According to John C. Maxwell’s steps of leadership, it states that the ultimate pinnacle of a leader is the one that brings out a glow on the impact. Every minor detail is monitored because this kind of a leader is well-organized, accessible, concerns priorities and most of all gives love and life to what he or she does. This is an elaboration of a lean individual who is strong, human and understands all corners of a wall that can get affected through any decision made. Many people mistake Lean for weakness. Technically it is the opposite and well-desired necessity in any management.

“Lean” is a systematic approach in identifying and eliminating waste through continuous improvement. This statement enhances an example of comparing an unhealthy person to a large company with no guidance on a prioritized management system.

This concept of “Lean Management” can be applied towards any part of a business or professional job an individual pursues to run an effective overall performance of a company.

Many established and reputed businesses in Sri Lanka, apply this theory as a part of their corporate policy and regulation. All established leaders have been through the process of achieving compatible results following this leadership style.

These Sri Lankan companies have undertaken to create value to the customers by optimizing the available resources in different levels and stages. Most established companies focus on developing and appointing lean leaders is to stabilise workflow. This increases the trust of the demands that arise in their customers. As lean leaders, the continuous process involves the gradual improvement of upcoming leaders. This transforms all employee mindsets into better independent professionals

One of the best cases that have received tremendous results is a well known international apparel producer. They discovered the Lean Management Approach in 2004 after the Chairman at the time paid a visit to one of the factories in Vietnam. He was inspired by the uniformed output that was produced efficiently in an orderly timeframe. In this situation, he decided to implement the regulation into the group companies in Sri Lanka. This ground decision has doubled the performance after applying the Lean Management approach in this giant firm. In 2008, a massive growth was depicted through the application of this concept, transforming the company into a 2 billion USD company. This change in leadership style resulted in the company having the ability to face the economic recessions and manage their human resources at its best-operating methods.

Today, the world is facing a pandemic that has brought drastic changes to many lives and businesses. As a part of the normal living patterns, it is concerned that any step needs to be actioned to survive. Research has surprised businesses that this pandemic is the quickest way to recover, lead and drive CHANGE in a CRISIS.

Lean management has impacted perseverant businesses positively. This change impacted during a crisis has introduced the importance of applying the management concept to get long-term results physically, spiritually and socially. In Sri Lanka, local businesses have applied lean management into their company policies after the crisis occurred.

During the lockdown, one of the cases of an agricultural industry faced a positive-negative-positive impact together. Before the pandemic, they delivered an average of 50 orders per day. During the lockdown, they had an obvious positive impact of better growth. Their orders per day multiplied 1000 times than the general delivery numbers. From 50 – 500, the business had a transformational change in their income but not their productivity. They faced problems with the orders that were beyond control and they had to shut down online delivery systems due to the overload and mismanagement. Customers turned out to be unhappy when the deliveries were not punctual. Hence, the management took a drastic decision in shutting off a major opportunity. The discovery led to revamping their Value Scheming, reorganizing their order layouts, workload balancing and team collaboration. Gradually within 2 weeks, with the application of the Lean Management Concept, the team managed to touch the market with achieving the daily target of 500 orders. By the third week in the research timeframe, the team managed to clear the backlogs and satisfy its customers with better values. Week four was covered to prepare deliveries every other day the orders were placed, which gave them a reasonable amount of time to reserve and arrange the delivering in an organized manner. Their leadership style made an impact on everyone in the team of the organization to prepare for challenges beyond charisma and with decent responsibilities.

There were many similar cases from small scale to large scale businesses. They showed massive improvement in their leadership style and value in their business and employees equally.

Strong leadership is a lean leadership. It is important to adhere to details your employee has personally experienced with the customer’s demands. A lean leader cooperates well with rational thinking. The process of coping with a pandemic requires patience and good coordination among the teammates in the organization. A lean leader takes decisions that are equal and fair to the company and the employees in the firm. Today, including new companies, have embraced this concept management and applied into their policy and regulations. They have created tremendous outputs that have relied over their success stories and created better leaders within their firms. The question is, has this new leadership style concept created better leadership personalities in reality? Has it successfully managed both wins and failures equally and organically among the team of an organization?

According to statistics, 70% transformation efforts fail. Even the most successful businesses have contributed to this risk due to 2 main reasons:

  1. Duplicating other company leadership strategies which are of a different industry and that does not match the company policies of another industry.
  2. Declaration of early victory and celebration without entering firmly into the culture.

Both aspects have obstructed this management concept by wrong application techniques. The ultimate reason that leaders faced this kind of obstruction is due to less guidance and organizational discipline. It is vital that a trending and demanding leaders needs to be guided, trained and polished by experts who understand how to reduce multiple risk challenges and increase satisfaction and efficiency equally. A proper lean leadership guide will help a business or leader  make decisions based on the type, size, policies, culture and many other factors that make their firm unique. Not fitting in the wrong puzzle into a different piece.

There are questions in many enthusiastic people who want to create a legacy. Today, businesses demand professionals who can be themselves and think out of the box. To bring this kind of self-culture to the open it is important to change the style of leadership.

Knowledge explains that there are 3 kinds of leadership. According to John Shook, “There are three kinds of leaders: Those that tell you what to do. Those that allow you to do what you want. And Lean leaders that come down to the work and help you figure it out.”

In this case, after analyzing the main characteristics, it is important to transform the leadership style from a Traditional Leader into a Lean Leader. The vital elements of an exceptional leader are not just about leading but helping the followers transform into leaders and encourage self-development. Lean leaders help others to learn and grow, while it is done for itself. The current generation is inspired to coach and help people better through developing next-level leaders. Lean leadership, unlike traditional responsibility, understands that the entire team takes up the responsibility to fill collaborative gaps in their respective business markets.
